Should you build a blockchain platform or license one?
The honest version of this comparison names the case for building nothing at all.
The answer
License when the capability is a means to a business outcome you need this year — custody, issuance, settlement — and building it would take a year an enterprise buyer will not wait for. Build when the capability is the product you intend to own and differentiate on for the next several years, and you have or can hire the team to operate it, not just ship it.
The question underneath the question
Is this a capability you intend to own in three years? If yes, build alongside a delivery partner and take the knowledge transfer seriously as a deliverable, not a courtesy. If no, licensing is nearly always cheaper and faster, and the honest comparison should say so rather than defaulting to the build because that is the engagement being sold.
What a build-or-buy assessment must include on both sides
The operating cost in year two, not just the build cost in year one — the number most comparisons omit because it is unflattering to whichever option the assessor prefers.
The team required to run it, not just to ship it: on-call, node operations, incident response, and who does that at 3 a.m.
The case for doing neither, where a licensed platform or a simpler integration removes the need for either build or buy.
