DefinedTerm · chains
Finality window
The interval between a transaction being included on a chain and the point at which reversal is treated as impossible under the institution’s stated risk tolerance. It is a policy number informed by the chain’s properties, not a property of the chain alone.
Common causes
Probabilistic consensus, reorganisation depth under adverse conditions, and a settlement obligation that was set without reference to either.
What good looks like
A confirmation threshold derived from a stated tolerance, recorded in the architecture document, and revisited when the chain’s conditions change.
