What does building a durable in-game or in-title asset economy cost?

A durable asset system needs a sink as carefully designed as its faucet. Neither is primarily an engineering problem.

The answer

The build cost is rarely where these programmes fail, and rarely where the budget should concentrate — the economy instrumentation that lets a designer see whether the sink is keeping pace with the faucet is the line that determines whether the launch budget was well spent, and it is the line most gaming studios omit from the first estimate entirely.

Where the real cost sits

Ownership, transfer and provenance for a durable item is a bounded, estimable engineering task. Player custody that does not require a player to understand key management is a solved pattern this practice has shipped more than once. The open-ended cost is the dashboard and the instrumentation that tells a designer, in near real time, whether the economy is actually balanced — without it, an unbalanced economy is discovered by players before it is discovered by the studio.
